Hybrid (2015)

Hybrid (2015)

This bird is very similar to the Lesser Scaup in the previous shot with a look of a Tuftie but with the silver 'vermiculite' back. On closer look though, the head is the wrong shape for a Tuftie or a Lesser Scaup and it has that very orange coloured eye. This was shot at Cosmeston but has been seen most days either at Cardiff Bay where it first appeared and then latterly down at Cosmeston, hanging out with the Tufties.
The head shape and eye colour is a bit of a giveaway as to the parents - likely a tuftie and a pochard. You can compare the eye colour to the tuftie who have bright yellow eyes rather than orange in the previous images.
